Nearly one hundred years later, the mission of caring for patients in their homes remains resolute at the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire.

Blood’s Seafood Celebrating 60 Years

In 1947, while the price of gasoline hovered around 15 cents per gallon and a loaf of bread cost 13 cents; while the radio blared Frank Sinatra’s “Mam’selle,” and big screen audiences chuckled through Bing Crosby’s quips and spoofs in Road to Rio, Denman “Debby” E. Blood, a meat cutter; by trade and his wife, Gladys L. Coutermarsh, opened Blood’s Market, a grocery store selling S.S. Pierce products and a full line of beef and chicken, at the corner of 55 South Main Street in White River Junction, Vt.

You know the onset of summer is official when village greens across the region fill with tents that house a treasure trove of artisan delights. The first booth might burst at the seams with one-of-a-kind clothing stitched from colorful hand-woven fabric. The next harbors trays of gemstones and delicately crafted jewelry. Across the aisle, the sun dances along dovetail joinery and an intricate inlaid tabletop. Just beyond, the potter wheel whirls in a demonstration of hands on patience and grace.
